About Us

WELCOME

It might seem like your local roads are always being dug up by different people every other week but honestly, it only feels like that.

With the information provided here at Road.Works we hope to minimise the impact of current and future works on your daily life and allow you the opportunity to make alternative plans.

We currently have roadwork information available for England and Scotland. Unfortunately, Wales and Northern Ireland do not provide feeds currently of roadworks in their area but as soon as they do, we will of course add them to our data.

As well as making the roadworks available on this site we have worked hard on creating a notification system that can either keep you updated by email or device notifications. If you subscribe to a road work event, you'll get an alert whenever there are additional updates.

We have also made it really easy for you to keep your friends and family updated with road works that might affect them with our sharing options. If you think others might be affected by a works event, share it to Facebook or X and spread the word.

We don't charge or require registration to use this site and have no plans to do so but it does cost money to provide and so if you have been helped by the information on this site, please consider a small donation to keep us going.

Promoters

This site receives data directly from the Department for Transport (DfT) and the Scottish Road Works Commissioner who, in turn receive roadwork plans and ongoing updates directly from the organisations who are to carry them out.

This will include local authorities themselves who are maintaining our local roads as well as telecoms companies such as BT and Virgin Media and the multitude of smaller companies who are building the next generation full-fibre broadband network.

Furthermore, other utilities that manage our gas and electricity networks are also included as are the water companies.

And dont forget the myriad of other organisations such as Network Rail, the mobile phone networks, airports, homebuilders and HS2 who will all be amongst those needing to plan, maintain and finalise works to our roads, footpaths, verges and cycleways.

Local Authorities

There are currently almost 200 local authorities that are both maintaining our roads and managing those other companies that need to impact them in such a way that could affect your commute to work, your walk to the shops or a weekend cycle ride.

The information they manage about the roadworks and the permits to individual promoters allows for works to be properly managed and to minimise the impact, as much as possible, on our journeys. And of course, they oversee the works in such a way as to maximise site safety for the indviduals carrying out the works and for the members of the public that come into reach of these works.

Our Other Sites

We have been providing direct roadworks information for over two years at our StreetGuide site and following feedback and surveys of the way people found and viewed the road works data, we decided to launch this separate, dedicated site devoted entirely to road works.

We have simpliied the layout, made it more obvious as to what is happening, and when, and also improved the performance.

It has also allowed us to restructure the data such that we will be providing more and more hyper localised information about the impact on the streets in your area.

We have overlayed different data views from Transport for London and Traffic Scotland so you can see near-live camera images of the roads where camera feeds are available giving you a fantastic opportunity to check the traffic conditions before you set off. We are looking to add additional areas as soon as we can obtain feed data from the local authorities - although this will not be possible in all areas due to local data processing rules.

Whilst designing the new site we have also been hard at work analysing the millions of pieces of data we have regarding roadworks with a view to provide analysis and summaries of historical works in your area and we will be looking to add these to the site as they are proofed and become available over the coming months.

If you have any ideas of things you would like to see or that would help you navigate roadworks better then we are always pleased to receive such suggestions from our viewers.
